Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and looking for ideas of what could be the cause? My car starts fine when cold, but after a good run when the engine is warm the starter runs like a dog. turning the engine over really slowly. I've now had the starter motor rebuilt twice, and also ended up getting the alternator rebuilt as it was only producing about 35amps due to worn brushes, but I'm still experiencing a really slow turnover when the engine is hot and sometimes it fails to start at all - quite embarrasing when i pull in for fuel ;-) I then have to wait for the car to cool, although on one occasion I did manage to get it started using a booster box, which is suggesting the starter is somehow not getting enough juice when warm? It's also had a new battery and the grounding straps have been checked. Any suggestions of what to look at next would be greatly appreciated. Steve

I had this problem about two years ago, the only way I could start the car when hot was to have the throttle wide open. I subsequently purchased a wosp lightweight starter motor from demon tweaks. This is setup for the Daytona and 365 series. It has absolutely transformed the starting, hot and cold as it spins the engine over much faster and is a straight bolt in swap, so that you can go back to the original whenever you want. http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motors...na-330-365-400

Hi Steve, unlike a cold start try turning the engine over with the throttle half or more open. Also avoid pumping a few times and see if this helps. While I never had trouble with the original starter I changed to a small high torque unit and have been happy with it.Might also check the timing as too much advance can slow a hot motor on restart. Good luck,Mike

Hi Steve This is a really interesting thread & there is no doubt that cold starting on our is easy. Hot starting has an enormous potential to be difficult & the risk of flooding with all those jets & fuel around may be a problem. When hot I have always set the accelerator about half way with no pumping & turned the engine over for it to fire. I have not come across slow starter motor operation when hot but bow to Mike's superior knowledge about ignition advance. I did have motor starter motor overhauled & replaced the solenoid & found its removal & replacement a real pain. I also wonder if the solenoid my be at fault here. Regards & good luck Ian L

Cheers for the advice guys, maybe I'm just expecting too much from the original starter motor. I'm confident it's not a vapor lock issue; I've tried lots of combinations - gass full on, half - pumping or no-pumping pedal, and it makes no difference. Mike - timing could be at fault - this was done recently when I added electronic ignition although I'd have hoped it would've been set-up correctly. When the engines Hot the starter motor noticeably slows down and the engine has a lot of trouble catching. It feels a bit like some kind of metal expansion is placing extra strain on the starter somewhere along the line? Maybe just an upgraded starter motor is the way to go, Or Ian you may be onto something with the Solenoid, I'll look into this first. Anyway, you've given me a few more things to look into so thanks chaps, I'll let you know how I get on. Steve

Steve When you talk about a metal to metal expansion feeling could there be an issue with the starter ring gear/solenoid. May be something to check out if the starter motor spins at normal speed when off the car? Good luck Ian L

Hi Steve, to eliminate heat on the starter motor as a cause why not try to insulate it with a shield or some exhaust wrap.Might give a clue as to the reaction of the starter to temp differential.Good luck ,Mike

Hi Steve / Mike There should be a curved aluminium asbestos lined heat shroud fitted around the starter motor. May be Mike is correct & it is not present on your car. It is shown on the parts manual Tav 43 No 31 Regards Ian L

Hi Ian/Steve,Ian is of course correct. I should have advised to see if the shield is present. It was missing on my car when I made the switch to the high torque starter. As always good luck. Mike

Well, wouldn't you know it. The shield is not present on my car. I've had a look on Maranello parts and neither the original 13240 part or the superceeded 100455 part are available :-( I'll continue my search. Thanks all!

Found one from a 400GT at eurospares :-) I'll let you know if this cures the issue... fingers crossed. Steve
